Mourning & Remembrance: Symbolism & Iconography in 19th Century Cemeteries… Part II

This will be a walking tour that will focus on the symbolism and Iconography discussed in the lecture on March 25. Learn about the symbolism behind the designs found on tombstones in this historic cemetery. Wear comfortable shoes!

Location: Longwood Cemetery in Bedford, VA
Meet at the entrance to the cemetery on Longwood Avenue (near traffic signal at Oakwood Street). Rain or shine!

The program will be presented by Sergei Troubetzkoy, Director of Tourism for Bedford. Mr. Troubetzkoy has given a number of programs throughout Virginia, Washington, DC and in Cambridge, Massachusetts on this subject. He developed the first organized walking tours for Richmond’s Hollywood, Shockoe, Old Hebrew and Oakwood Cemeteries, for Petersburg’s Old Blandford Cemetery and for Staunton’s Thornrose and Trinity Church Cemeteries.
