The Town of Liberty During Hunter’s Raid
This walking tour that will explore parts of the Town of Liberty (now the City of Bedford) that were greatly affected by U.S. General David Hunter and 15,000 troops who came through the community on their way to try and capture Lynchburg in June of 1864. Sergei Troubetzkoy, Director of Tourism for Bedford, will lead the tour that will focus on buildings that survive from that era and some of the personalities associated with them.
“Avenel” served as headquarters for Union General David Hunter. This program is being held in conjunction with the Civil War History Mobile which will be open to the public at no charge from 9am–5pm throughout the weekend at the Bedford Area Welcome Center, 816 Burks Hill Road.
Location: Bower Center in Bedford, VA
Meet at the Bower Center at 305 North Bridge Street, and wear comfortable shoes! Rain or shine!
The program will be presented by Sergei Troubetzkoy, Director of Tourism for Bedford. Mr. Troubetzkoy has given a number of programs throughout Virginia, Washington, DC and in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
