Meet Barry Koplen
The past five years Danville’s Barry Koplen, prolific writer and photographer, has been writing and publishing a series of living history books about the revitalization of, Danville, Virginia’s historical downtown as well as its housing area just beyond. Work on these areas is illustrated with his photographs of contractors and crews responsible for that construction. Koplen’s collection of canvas photographs, titled Men at Work, continues to expand even after his fourth book about Danville’s historic restoration came to fruition. Thirty of these images were exhibited in 2019 at the J. C. Reynolds Homestead in Critz, VA.
Along with numerous awards Koplen has received for his photographs, there have been exhibits at Piedmont Arts in Martinsville, VA and Alamance Arts in Graham, NC. In addition, a prize-winning photograph was on exhibit at the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History. Also, a dozen selections from the Men at Work collection have been exhibited at the Wednesday Club in Danville. In addition to the Best in Show he received at Bower he also received the 1st Place recognition for Body of Works in Bower Center’s Through the LENS exhibit in the fall of 2021.
