Smalti has been used for hundreds of years to create mosaic works - the many colors and the visual effects of smalti make it very versatile. It is particularly noted for its reflective quality and texture. Solid colors, transparent colors, gold … smalti is both traditional and contemporary and increasing in use by mosaic artists today.
Smalti has been made for centuries in Italy, in Mexico since the early 1950s, and more recently in China. The color palette has an extensive range and includes some transparent colors plus vibrant 24 karat golds. Learn how this vibrant glass is made, the differences, (depending on the manufacturer), and how to use the traditional hammer and hardie and modern wheeled cutters for cutting and shaping.
