Bower Center for the Arts Hosts Bedford County High School Invitational Art Show 2017

New energy, new direction! Partnerships between businesses in Bedford County and the Visual Arts Program of Bedford County Public Schools are serving to highlight the growth and expanding interest in the arts of its students and the community. No longer is artwork being kept within the confines of the schools, but is being showcased in many community venues. Doors have opened from restaurants, private art galleries, and municipal buildings and to the latest showing, the Bower Center for the arts BCPS Invitational.

Jefferson Forest, Staunton River, and Liberty High School students were mentored in the proper hanging standards suitable for an art center as directed by Dotti Stone. Revelle Hamilton, Tab O’Neil, and Peggy Markham all extended the courtesy of their time and experience to judge this year’s show. Judges meet with teachers after the judging to discuss how and why certain pieces were selected as award winners, thus only strengthening the professional development for the art teachers involved.

On Friday, May 12th the public viewed 306 pieces of artwork from 11 categories. The best in show honor was bestowed on a paper collage, ”Liza”, by Kendall Mullins from Jefferson Forest High School under the direction of Jennifer Tonkins.

Awards

1st Place blue ribbons were awarded to Morgann Dills, Kadie McAllister, Zack Key from Liberty High School, Skylar Meador, Kali Arnett, Caitlynn Beggs, Seth Young from Staunton River HS, and Juliet Hatch, Kiara Harrison, and Tara Enneking from Jefferson Forest HS. Each category was given a 1st, 2nd, 3rd and honorable mention award. With the scale of the show it was no easy task to select this year’s winners!

Bower Center for the Arts is pleased to make this an annual event!
