About the Judge: Katherine Shortridge received her undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College and her M.F.A. in painting from Indiana UniversityBloomington. She joined the faculty at Roanoke College in 2003, where she teaches basic through advanced courses in drawing and painting, and is currently serving as the chairperson of the Fine Arts Department. For the past twenty years, Shortridge’s paintings, drawings, and prints have been an exploration of sense of place and relationships with the landscape. Her abstract work is based on observation and interpretation of these experiences. Travel is an important part of her working process and she has received awards to study the landscape both internationally and regionally. Most recently Shortridge obtained a residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris and at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. She has painted not only exotic landscapes from Iceland, France, and Nicaragua, but also deeper investigations closer to home in the Midwest and Southwestern Virginia.
