For towns too small or too poor to attract a mall, a downtown theater can be a major asset to a town's economic vitality and sense of community. Nearby cafes and restaurants gain a magnet, and an informal social gathering point has been created for all ages.
Currently, local residents who would like to watch an occasional film must drive long distances, and those too young to drive do without.
The social and cultural trends leading to an economic decline in small towns like Bedford are deeply rooted. However, an operating downtown movie house indicates that a town is alive, and economic activity continues.
As a Downtown Anchor of Bedford, the Bower Center is an active component and partner of the Downtown revitalization processes. Housed in an 1846 church converted into an Arts & Cultural center, we are a vital part of an innovative roap map to a sustainable future through art tourism, enthusiastic community engagement, and creative economies.
We believe that adding equipment to screen movies at the Bower Center for the Arts would provide at least two important benefits for our small town. First, the theater improves the town's economy by providing surrounding shops and restaurants with spillover activity. Second, community movie theaters do exactly what they say: build community.
Movies are one of the great social levelers of a community. No society can prosper without centers of civility and public sociability. This is the role that the cities and their arts and cultural centers have always played.
Creating a place for screening movies is one way local citizens band together, provide a gathering place for social engagement, and build a stronger community.
